Even though media production is both my profession and a love of my life, I have a number of other interests as well.  I’m listing some of them below along with a favorite link or two.  In no particular order of importance, I enjoy reading, plastic model building, classic muscle cars, internet research, woodworking, anything related to Route 66 and buying/selling on eBay.  Above all of these things, though, I’m particularly proud of and thankful for my three grown children and four grandchildren.

My reading tastes lean toward historical fiction and non-fiction.  One of my favorite writers is Clive Cussler (Dirk Pitt novels).  Another is Philip Gulley (“Home to Harmony” series).  Presently I’m going through a stack of books on the war in the Pacific during World War II, mainly because I’m working on a documentary involving that time period.

I’ve been building models since I was in grade school (I’m 52 now).  I’ve always been partial to autos, but planes have intrigued me as well.  I raced slot cars during my early to mid-teen years, back during the “golden era” of the hobby/sport.  Plastic model bodies usually found their way onto the track.  Because of my current interest in WWII, I’m building my first aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Saratoga (CV-60).  I have about a dozen cars and motorcycles in various stages of completion as well.  None of them are contest winners but all of them are great fun.

I was a teenager during the introduction of muscle cars to the American auto scene and they still have a hold on me.  I own a 1961 Chevrolet Corvair (not much “muscle” but a real head-turner) and someday hope to buy and restore a 1966 Mustang.  My favorite cars of all time, though, are Carroll Shelby’s 289 S/C Cobra and Ford’s GT-40.  Since both are available as kit cars, I’m thinking about one of each to go with the stallion.  But then there’s the 2006 Shelby GT500 coming out soon, and . . . . . . . . .

Internet research fascinates me.  I’m old enough to remember when there was no internet (I pre-date Al Gore) and, frankly, I don’t know how we ever got along without it.  Tons of information on almost every subject under the sun is now available at our fingertips in an instant.  If a person has enough patience and a fast enough connection, whole new worlds are his/hers for the asking.  My biggest fear right now is that my computer will crash and I’ll lose all my “favorites”.  Does anyone really know how to back those up?

Woodworking is one of those activities that has always appealed to me but one I’ve never had the right tools and shop space to do well.  That doesn’t stop me from buying books on the subject and planning for a “New Yankee Workshop” facility somewhere down the road.  There’s just something about the smell of raw wood that resonates.

Route 66 has only become a favorite interest within the past ten years or so.  I’ve lived within a few blocks of it in two Oklahoma locations and have traveled parts of it from Chicago to Los Angeles.  My favorite stretch of the Mother Road is from Miami, Oklahoma west to Amarillo, Texas.  Some of my heroes are all those who support the various state Route 66 organizations and the roadies who write the books, operate the “mom and pop” businesses and perform ambassador duties in order to keep the route alive for current and future generations.

Buying and selling on eBay is a love/hate relationship.  My brother and I have a store on eBay called “Heartland Movie Posters & More” where we sell movie posters and some leftover inventory from a bricks and mortar hobby store I had a year ago.  I’ve heard that some people are making good money on eBay but I’m certainly not one of them.  It is fun dealing with other buyers and sellers, though.  It’s a real geography lesson servicing people from locations across the globe.
